Creed III is a 2023 American sports drama film directed, produced and starring Michael B. Jordan (in his directorial debut) from a film by Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin. It is the sequel to Creed II (2018), the third film in the Creed film series and the ninth film in the Rocky film series. Also starring Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris, Mila Davis-Kent, Florian Munteanu and Phylicia Rashad. In the film, successful and recently retired boxer Adonis Creed (Jordan) faces his childhood friend and former boxing prodigy Damian Anderson (majors). Majors and the rest of the cast joined from November 2021 to September 2022; Creed III is the first film in the series in which Sylvester Stallone does not reprise his role as Rocky Balboa, although he is credited as a producer along with Ryan Coogler, who contributed to the film's story. In 2002 Los Angeles, young Adonis "Donnie" Creed sneaks out with his best friend, Golden Gloves champion Damian "Diamond Dame" Anderson, to see him compete in an underground boxing match. After Dame wins, he tells Donnie about his aspirations to turn pro and become a world champion. At a liquor store detour, Donnie impulsively attacks a man named Leon, and Lady is arrested while Donnie escapes.
Today, Donnie has retired from boxing to focus on his wife, Bianca, and their daughter, Amara, whose hearing loss eventually led to the family's mastery of American Sign Language. Donnie runs the Delphi Boxing Academy with Tony "Little Duke" Evers Jr. and promotes his protégé, world champion Felix "El Guerrero" Chavez in a match against Viktor Drago. As they watch Donnie's adoptive mother Mary-Anne's health deteriorate, Amara wants to become a boxer like Donnie, which gets her in trouble at school for punching another student.
Released from prison, Dame returns to Donnie and shares her desire to continue her boxing career. Donnie reluctantly invites Dame to the gym, but her presence earns the scorn of Chavez and Duke. Dame later visits Donnie's home, where she meets his family and recounts their time together in the group home, a story Bianca has never heard. In private, Dame asks for his title shot against Chavez, but Donnie refuses. When Dragon is attacked by an unknown assailant at a party at Bianca's label, who questions his ability to participate in her upcoming fight, Donnie appoints Dame as Dragon's replacement. After the match, Mary-Anne is visited by an upset Donnie, who shows her the letters Dame wrote to Donnie while in prison, which she hid from him, thinking she was a bad influence. One of the letters has a picture of Dame with her partner, who Donnie recognizes as the Dragon's attacker. Realizing that Lady orchestrated the attack, Donnie confronts him and Lady admits that she manipulated him to get the championship. Donnie is unable to tell Bianca of his guilt to Dame, who rejoices in her newfound fame and publicly slanders Donnie as a traitor who turned his back on her.
Mary-Anne suffers another stroke and dies. After the funeral, Donnie confesses to Bianca about the night of Dame's arrest and exposes Leo as an abusive caregiver at their group home before adoption. When Donnie attacked Leon at the liquor store, Dame pulled a gun on Leon's friends in the ensuing fight. After Dame's arrest, Donnie never contacted Dame about his guilt.
With Bianca's encouragement, Donnie decides to come out of retirement and challenges Dame to the championship, which she accepts. After training with Duke and the recovered dragon, Donnie goes toe-to-toe with Dame in the "Battle of Los Angeles" at Dodger Stadium. Out of work and in an equal relationship, Donnie has visions of his abusive foster home and Dame's life in prison, leading to a knockout in the final round. Donnie knocks Dame out to win the match and win the title. Later, Donnie reconciles with Dame and both men admit that it was not the other's fault.
