Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiered in Tokyo on April 10, 2017, and was released in the United States on May 5, 2017 as part of the three phases of the MCU. It grossed over $863 million worldwide, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of 2017, surpassing its predecessor. The film was praised for its visuals, direction, music, humor and performances, although some critics considered it inferior to the original. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 90th Academy Awards. The sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will be released on May 5, 2023, preceded by Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy special in November 2022.

In 2014, Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Baby Groot are known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Ayesha, leader of the sovereign race, orders the Guardians to protect the precious batteries from the interdimensional monster Abilisk in exchange for Gamora's estranged sister, Nebula, who was caught stealing the batteries. As Raketti steals his batteries, the Overlord attacks the Guardians' ship with a fleet of drones. A mysterious figure destroys the drones and the Guardians crash down on a nearby planet. There, that character reveals himself to be Quill's father, Ego, and invites Quill, Gamora, and Drax to his home planet. Rocket and Groot stay behind to repair the ship and guard the nebula.
Meanwhile, Ayesha Yondu hires Udonta and his crew, exiled from the greater Ravager community for child trafficking, to capture the Guardians. They capture the missile, but when Yondu hesitates to hand over the Quill he cultivated, his lieutenant Kraglin Obfonter questions his objectivity, and second lieutenant Taserface leads the rebellion with Nebula's help. Taserface captures Rocket and Yondu on his ship and executes his loyalists. Nebula sets out to find and kill Gamora, whom she blames for the torture their adoptive father Thanos inflicted on her. Rocket and Yondu were freed by Groot and Kraglin, the latter of which never intended to start a rebellion. Using Yondu's arrow, the group destroys the ship and its crew as they escape. Taserface warns the ruler before he dies. Ego hired Yondu to bring back a young Quill after Meredith's death, but the boy was never born, and Ego has been looking for him ever since. He teaches Quill how to manipulate celestial power. The Mist arrives on Ego's planet and tries to kill Gamora, but the pair form an uneasy alliance when they discover a cave full of skeletal remains. Ego reveals to Quill that during his travels, he planted saplings on thousands of worlds that could become his new extensions, but only the power of the Two Heavens could activate them. To do this, he burdened countless women and hired Yondu to collect some of the children, but killed them all when they could not access the heavenly power. Initially, Quill appears under Ego's influence when Ego reveals that he gave Meredith the brain tumor that killed Meredith for bothering him, forcing Ego to take the parasitic energy from Quill's energy to activate the seedlings that will consume the entire world. .
