Doctor Strange is a 2016 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. In June 2014, Derrickson was hired to direct and Spaihts rewrote the script. In Kathmandu, the sorcerer Kaecilius eagerly enters the secret Kamar-Taj complex and beheads its librarian. In New York, Dr. Stephen Strange, a wealthy and respected but arrogant neurosurgeon, seriously injures his arm in a car accident on his way to a speaking conference, leaving him permanently disabled. Another surgeon, Christine Palmer, tries to help him move on, but Strange tries unsuccessfully to perform experimental surgeries to heal his hand. Strange hears about Jonathan Pangborn, a paraplegic who mysteriously regained his legs. Pangborn leads Strange to Kamar-Taj, where he is greeted by Mordo, the Wizard of the Ancients. The Ancient One shows his powers to Strange, revealing the astral plane and other dimensions such as the Mirror Dimension. The zealots then attack the New York asylum, killing its guardian, but Strange fends them off with a levitation cloak only to be seriously injured in the confrontation. He teleports back to the hospital where Palmer saves him. Returning to the sanctuary, Strange reveals to Mordo that the Ancient One drew power from the Dark Dimension to maintain longevity, and Mordo becomes disappointed in him. After a battle in New York's Mirror Dimension, Kaecilius wounds the Ancient One and flees to Hong Kong. Before dying, he tells Strange that he and Mordo must work together to defeat Kaecilius, balancing Mordo's steadfast nature with Strange's willingness to break the rules. Strange and Mordo arrive in Hong Kong to find Wong dead, the Sanctuary destroyed, and the earth taken over by the Dark Dimension. Strange uses the eye to turn back time and save Wong, then enters the darkness and creates an infinite time loop around himself and Dormamu. After repeatedly killing Strange to no avail, Dormammu finally accepts his offer, leaving Earth permanently and taking Kaecilius and the Zealots with him in exchange for cutting Strange off.

Disgusted by Strange and the Ancient One defying the laws of nature, Mordo gives up his wizarding career and leaves. Strange returns the Eye, which reveals the Infinity Stone, back to Kamar-Taj and resides in the New York Refuge to continue his studies with Wong.
