Before his capture, Bardi Edgin Darvis served as a member of the Harpers, a peacekeeping organization, until his wife was killed by the disciples of the Red Wizard, whom he arrested. Accompanied by the barbarian Holga Kilgore, Edgin tried to create a new life for himself and his daughter Kira, turning to the thief, collaborating with the amateur wizard Simon Aumar, the rogue Forge Fitzwilliam and Forge's mysterious acquaintance Sofina. Seizing Harper's Fort, Edgin attempted to steal the "Resurrection Tablet" to resurrect his wife, but he and Holga were captured when their accomplice escaped.

After two years in the arctic prison of Revel's End, the pair escape to Neverwinter and learn that Forge has become lord there after his previous master was mysteriously incapacitated. Forge took care of Kira, convincing her that Edgin's selfish greed caused his arrest. It turns out that Sofina is a red wizard and she and Forge set up the trap on purpose. Sofina tries to execute Edgin and Holga, but they escape and decide to loot the Forge's vault and bring Kira home during the upcoming High Sun Games. They need the tablet to prove their innocence to Kira and bring Edgin's wife back to life. Gladiator games were previously banned, but Forge reinstated them, promising that the games would bring in tourists and money. Edgin and Holga find Simon to help, and he also suggests enlisting the druid Doric, whose forest community opposes the Forge-ordered logging.

Transformed into a fly, Doric breaks into Castle Forge and discovers that the vault contains Mordenkainen's magical defenses, which Simon cannot deny. Simon suggests that the magical relic "The Helm of Disjunction" can disable them. They travel to an old cemetery to ask Holga's ancestors where to find it. Simon resurrects the dead with a talisman long enough for them to answer five questions; the corpses reveal that they gave the helm to Xenk Yandar, a palatine who fled her country to Thay when the Red Wizards turned her people into an army of the dead. Simon has trouble controlling the power of the steering wheel, so they decide to use a staff to access the vault during the games. Simon and Holga burst through the magically sealed door, only to find the room empty except for a magical trap. Disguised as Kira, Sofina defeats Edgin. The group is captured and forced to participate in the games, but manages to escape from the stadium. Dorika discovers that Forge has loaded the treasure on the boat and prepares to escape; the group steals a boat and rescues Kira from Forge, who threatened Kira's life.

As they escape, the group realizes that Sofina organized the games to attract a massive crowd and use Thay's Destroying Curse to turn them into an army of the dead. The group returns, carrying Forge's stolen items from the boat with the teleportation team and spreading them around the city in a hot air balloon, pulling people out of the stadium before Sofina's spell takes effect.

Enraged at her defeat, Sofina attacks the group, but Simon is able to control her magic and undo Sofina's time-stopping spell, allowing Kira to use the invisibility pendant Edgin and Holga gave Sofina an anti-magic bracelet when she was a child. . . Sofina is killed when Dorica attacks her in owl form and is crushed by falling debris, but Holga is mortally wounded.
