Perlman began work on the script in 2009. Guardians of the Galaxy was first publicly mentioned as a possible film by producer Kevin Feige in 2010, and Marvel Studios announced it was in active development at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2012. Gunn was hired to write and direct the film in September. In February 2013, Pratt was hired to play Peter Quill/Star-Lord, and the supporting cast was later confirmed. Principal photography began in July 2013 at Shepperton Studios, England, with filming continuing in London before wrapping in October 2013. In addition to an original score by Tyler Bates, the soundtrack features several popular songs from the 1960s and 1970s that Gunn selected. . Post-processing ended on July 7, 2014.

Guardians of the Galaxy Plot

In 1988, after the death of his mother, young Peter Quill is kidnapped from Earth by a group of extraterrestrial thieves and smugglers led by Yondu Udonta. In 2014, Morag Quill steals a mysterious orb on a desert planet, but is attacked by the forces of Ronan the Accuser, a fanatical Kree renegade led by Korath. Although Quill escapes with the Orb, Yondu discovers his theft and pays a bounty for his capture, while Ronan sends the assassin Gamora after the Orb.

When Quill tries to sell the orb in Xandar, the capital of the New Empire, Gamora ambushes him and steals it. A battle ensues involving a pair of bounty hunters: the genetically and cybernetically altered raccoon Rocket and the lumbering humanoid Groot. The four are captured by Nova Corps officers and held in Kyln Prison. A prisoner there, Drax the Destroyer, tries to kill Gamora because of her connection to Ronan, who killed his wife and daughter. Quill convinces Drax that Gamora can bring Ronan to him, though Gamora reveals that she betrayed Ronan by denying him the power of the Orb. After learning that Gamora plans to sell the Orb to collector Taneleer Tivan, Quill, Rocket, Groot, and Drax work with her to escape Kyln aboard Quill's ship in Milan. Ronan meets with Gamora's adoptive father, Thanos, to discuss her betrayal. Quill's group flees to Knowhere, a remote outlaw outpost in space built on the head of a sky giant. A drunk Drax calls Ron out, the rest of the party meets with Tivan. Tivan opens the orb to reveal the Power Stone, an immeasurable power that destroys all but the most powerful beings who wield it. Tivan's slave Carina grabs the rock and triggers an explosion that engulfs Tivan's collection. Ronan arrives and easily defeats Drax while the others escape to the ship with the followers of Ronan and the adopted sister of Gamora Nebula in pursuit. Nebula destroys Gamora's ship, leaving it floating in space, and Ronan's destroyers capture the orb.

Quill contacts Yondu before following Gamora into space and giving her his helmet to survive; Yondu comes and collects the pair. Rocket, Drax, and Groot threaten to attack Yondu's ship to save them, but Quill negotiates a truce and promises the Orb to Yondu. Quill's group agrees that facing Ronan means certain death, but they cannot let him use the Infinity Stone to destroy the galaxy. In Ronan's flagship, the Dark Aster, Ronan lowers the stone into his warhammer and takes its power. He approaches Thanos and threatens to kill him after destroying Xandar. Nebula hates her adoptive father and works with Ronan.

The Ravagers and Quill's group join the New Force and confront the Dark Aster on Xandar as Quill's group goes down with the battleship Milan. Ronan uses his empowered warhammer to destroy the Nova Corps fleet. Drax kills Korath and Gamora defeats Nebula, who flees, but the group find themselves invincible to Ronan's power until a missile crashes through Dark Aster's Ravager ship. A damaged Dark Aster crashes into Xandar as Groot sacrifices himself to protect the group. Ronan emerges from the rubble and prepares to destroy Xandar, but Quill distracts him and allows Drax and Rocket to destroy Ronan's warhammer. Quill catches the freed stone and uses it to vaporize Ronan, sharing his burden with Gamora, Drax, and Rocket.
