Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a 2021 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics and starring Shang-Chi. A film based on Shang-Chi began development in 2001, but work did not begin in earnest until December 2018, when Callaham was hired. Cretton joined in March 2019 and the project was fast-tracked to become Marvel's first Asian-led film. About a thousand years ago, Xu Wenwu discovered the mysterious ten rings that grant divine powers, including immortality. He founds the Ten Rings, an organization that conquers kingdoms and overthrows governments throughout history. In 1996, Wenwu Ta Lo searches for a village said to be inhabited by mythical animals. He wanders through the magical forest to the entrance of the village, only to be stopped by the guardian Ying Li. They fall in love and when Ta Lo villagers reject Wenwu, Li decides to leave with her. They married and have two children, Shang-Chi and Xialing. Wenwu resigns his organization and locks the ten rings.

When Shang-Chi is seven years old, Wenwu's enemies assassinate Iron Gang Li. Wenwu once again wears the Ten Rings, murders the Iron Band, and continues to lead his organization. He forces Shang-Chi to undergo brutal martial arts training, but does not allow Xialing to train with the others, encouraging him to secretly teach himself. When Shang-Chi is 14 years old, Wenwu sends him to assassinate the leader of the Iron Band. After completing his mission, a traumatized Shang-Chi flees to San Francisco and takes the name "Shaun".

Today, Shang-Chi works as a valet with his best friend Katy, who is unaware of his past. The Ten Rings Organization attacks them on the bus and steals the jewel Li gave to Shang-Chi. Fearing that the Ten Rings are looking for his matching jewel, Shang-Chi travels to Macau to find his sister. He reveals his past to Katy, who wants to help him. They find Xialing at the secret fight club he founded after packing Wenwu at the age of sixteen. They are taken to the Building of Ten Rings, where Wenwu uses the jewelry to reveal a mysterious map leading to Ta Lo. When his children and Katy resist, he imprisons them. The Great Protector revives Shang-Chi and carries him out of the lake to fight the Soul Eaters. Wenwu and Shang-Chi fight again, and Shang-Chi gets the upper hand, but decides to spare Wenwu. The Dark One escapes from the weakened gate and attacks Shang-Chi. Wenwu rescues Shang-Chi and bequeaths him the rings before he is killed by the Dark One. Shang-Chi, Great Protector, Xialing and Katy kill Asuka of Darkness.
