The plot
Long ago, Odin's father Bor collides with the dark elf Malekith, who tries to unleash a weapon known as the Aether across the nine worlds. After defeating Malekith's forces, including reinforced warriors called Kursedi, on their homeworld of Svartalfheim, Bor protects the Aether in a pillar of stone. Unknown to Bor, Malekith, his lieutenant Algrim, and a handful of dark elves escape suspended animation. In present-day Asgard, Loki is imprisoned for his war crimes on Earth. Meanwhile, Thor, together with the warriors Fandral, Volstagg, and Sif, fend off marauders in Vanaheim, the home of their comrade Hogun; that is the final battle in the war to pacify the nine kingdoms after the reconstruction of Bifröst, the "Celarc Bridge" between the kingdoms destroyed two years earlier. The Asgardians soon learn that the Convergence, a rare alignment of the Nine Realms, is close; as the event approaches, portals connecting the worlds appear randomly.
In London, astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster and her intern Darcy Lewis travel to an abandoned factory where portals have appeared that violate the laws of physics around them. Leaving the group, Foster teleports to another world where, in addition to having Heimdall's near omniscient vision, he absorbs the aether. Heimdall warns Thor and leads him to Earth. When Thor finds Foster, he accidentally unleashes an unearthly power and Thor returns to Asgard with him. Odin, recognizing the aether, warns that not only will the aether kill Foster, but its return heralds a disastrous omen.
Awakened by the release of the aether, Malekith attacks Asgard. During the battle, Malekith and Algrim search for Foster, discovering that he has an aether. Thor's mother Frigga is fatally stabbed to protect Foster, and Malekith and Algrim are forced to flee without Foster. Despite Odin's orders not to leave Asgard, Thor reluctantly enlists the help of Loki, who knows the secret portal to Svartalfheim, where they use Foster to lure Malekith out of Asgard and confront him. In return, Thor promises Loki revenge on Malekith for killing their mother. As Volstagg and Sif stop the Asgard soldiers and Fandral helps them escape, Thor, Loki and Foster head to Svartalfheim.
There, Loki tricks Malekith into extracting Foster's aether, but Thor's attempt to destroy the exposed substance fails. Malekith melts into the ether and leaves for his ship as Loki is struck for killing Algrim. Thor holds Loki in his arms and promises to tell their father about his sacrifice. Later, Thor and Foster find another portal in a nearby cave and meet Dr. Erik Selvig, Lewis and Foster's mentor in London, who was briefly hospitalized due to the emotional trauma he experienced on Earth during Loki's attack. They learn that Malekith plans to restore dark elf rule by releasing the aether in the middle of the Greenwich Convergence Zone. Thor battles Malekith through multiple portals and across multiple worlds until a single portal separates them, leaving Malekith unstoppable on Earth. Thor returns in time to help his fellow mortals use their scientific equipment to transport Malekith to Svartalfheim, where he destroys his own damaged ship.
Thor returns to Asgard, where he refuses Odin's offer of the throne and tells him of Loki's sacrifice. As he leaves, Odin transforms into Loki, who is alive and posing as Odin.
In the middle scene, Volstagg and Sif visit the Collector and entrust the Aether to his care, commenting that since the Tesseract is already in Asgard, it would not make sense to keep the two Infinity Stones so close together. As they leave, the Collector announces that he wants the remaining five stones. In the post-surrender scene, Foster and Thor are reunited on Earth, while somewhere in London, the Jotunheim Frost Monster, accidentally transported to Earth during the final battle, continues to rage.
