Pa Ranjith. Wow. Absolutely amazing. Screamingly good. So different. So high level. And so surreal seeing such things in Indian and Tamil cinema. Like what!? As well as so creative. Some of these elements were straightforward and done so well. But some were done well but different. How did they come up with them?
The story in on point. The editing is perfect. The film is fast and well paced. One scene goes to the other well.
As well as patient and robust. Two things Indian cinema doesn’t do well, but New Gen Tamil filmmakers kill it with.
Vikram was not here. It was Thangalaan. Where was Vikram? Did he go back in time and bring a Tribal man back to do the role? This was the man who played Ambi, Remo (let’s go some place and do the yo yo), Lingesan in I, Veeraiya in Raavanan, Aditha Karikalan, Akhilan Vinod and Dr. Love in Iru Mugan, KK in Kadaram Kondan and so much more. He is the best actor, after Kamal Hassan, in Tamil Cinema history! Epic acting and commitment.
The makeup and hair were out of this world good. The production design was spot on.
The main British man played by Daniel Caltagirone was good. Indian films usually do forieners very badly. But international level Pa Ranjith won’t do that. I’t not just that he was proper, but he even had fully fledged scenes and drama with other foreigners. Well done. The other guy, Arthur, was just plain bad. Not just acting and directing, but in writing and actions. There was even a bit he did a Jewish hand sign (Star Trek one) but he is supposed to be an Christian holy man.
Malavika Mohanan was screamingly good. Well directed and made up with the red.
Parvathy was very good, but a bit over in my opinion. She did the cliche ‘Malayalee actress doing a Tamil role’ schtick. Her and Aparna Balamurali have done this. It wasn’t bad, but she could have been given something else.
The action is on point and exciting.
Seriously, would another director and star actor do such a film in India? People say that about Malayalam, but this film has proven why Tamil is the Best Indian Industry, as they can also do the larger scale quality film. I’m not Tamil BTW.
The cinematography here was very good. The night shoots especially.
The whole cinematic feel and experience, especially towards the end, were really high.
GV Prakash, Mr Bharani Pattu from Rebel. He killed it here. The score was epic and the songs were great. I was disappointed that Pa Ranjith didn’t choose SaNa, but it is fine. SaNa would have been great and different, where GV was great but straightforward. I prefer SaNa but can’t criticise.
Some of the VFX were crap, but not like in low budget movies. Here it was simply not finished. I could even see some green artefacts. The rendering was not complete. Seriously, for such a high level, international, creative and strong director, this was disappointing.
The 2nd thing is this weird, amateurish looking, cream/yellowish grade/overlay. I saw the same but blue overlay and bad colour grading in Leo. Dhruva Natchathiram’s trailer also had this. Several larger budget recent Tamil movies have this and it is ruining the experience.
I don’t know if people can recognise, but most films, and no film in the past have these.
Leo and Dhruva Natchathiram both have Manoj Paramahamsa as their DOP. He is quite technical and digital. He loves the new RED DSMC3 cinema camera system. He also did Radhe Shyam and Beast. They were crap and had issues with the visuals. I am not saying he was the reason, as the directors of these were making wrong choices elsewhere too, but Loki with Leo?
SPOLIERS
Several of the creative choices were amazing such as pulsating Aarathi and the day/night fight. It was hard to do but that’s the point. Filmmaking supposed to be hard.
The toil and hardship can be seen on screen. It was again, Surreal. The painted faces, the eccentric shots such as the upside down shot on Vikram in the river, just wow.
The blood gushing out of Aarathi was epic.
There was a fight with a black panther where yes, this film is supposed to have some fantasy, but Clement swatting it off and not dying after it started tearing him apart was not the best. As well as the fact that this injured man, and others didn’t get infections.
As well as in another fight scene, where Clement should have been the white guy that does the most offence, but for some reason Arthur gets to shine. It was weird, where he was knocked out, but then gets up and kicks ass.

End of SPOLIERS
All in all, an epic story and epically directed, robust, cinematic motion picture.
